Okay, apparently this video actually happened a while ago, but I'm just now finding out about it. It is disgusting.

Keeping it classy pro-slaughter people, very classy. Nothing like shooting a horse in the head because you don't understand the basics of the English language well enough for you to engage in a civilized discussion with people who disagree with your views.

"ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — An Internet video that shows a meat company employee swearing at animal activists before shooting a horse in the head highlights the increasing emotional intensity of the national debate over whether a southeastern New Mexico plant should be allowed to resume domestic horse slaughter.

This week, animal rights groups uncovered the video posted by a former employee of Valley Meat Co., which has been fighting the United State Department of Agriculture for more than a year for approval to convert its former cattle slaughter operation into a horse slaughterhouse.

Valley Meat Co. owner Rick De Los Santos said the employee, who was let go this week, was reacting to harassment by animal rights activists who have targeted the plant since its plans were made public about a year ago"

"KOB reports that Tim Sappington, a maintenance contractor at Valley Meat Co. in Roswell, shot the disturbing video at his Dexter home. In it, Sappington leads a horse from its enclosure before sending a message to animal rights activists.

“To all you animal activists, fuck you,” he says into the camera. He then pulls a pistol from a holster on his hip and fires one shot into the horse’s head, instantly felling the animal. The horse is convulsed by a death spasm as it lies on the ground. “Good,” Sappington then says as he walks away from the dead horse.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that the state Livestock Board is now investigating the incident as a potential act of animal cruelty, serving Sappington with a search warrant on Thursday as public outrage over the killing has spread throughout the country. Sappington has reportedly received death threats, as are the operators of Valley Meat Co., who insist they had nothing to do with the video."

Valley Meat Co. is currently seeking federal approval to slaughter horses after Congress lifted a ban on the practice in 2011. While the slaughter of horses for food is controversial in the United States, some prominent animal advocacy groups, foremost among them People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) supported ending the ban on horse slaughter. PETA spokeswoman Lindsay Wrajt told NewsChannel 5 that domestic horse slaughter is the lesser of two evils since horses were sometimes inhumanely transported to Canada and Mexico during the ban.

“We want to avoid that, those trips are horrible for those animals,” Wrajt said. “Often times they’re denied food and water, the don’t get any rest, they don’t have any time to stretch their legs, so to speak, during that trip and we want to avoid putting them through that.”



Really PETA? Really? I don't know why I'm even surprised, it's not like you're very ethical or reasonable. But exactly how much shorter do you think the drive across the country is going to be, since there's going to be what, one slaughter house? 
Yes. The drive is awful. That's why we need to try and stop it before it gets to that point. Also, *sometimes* inhumanely transported?! Sometimes?  And you think what, because it's in the US the companies are suddenly going to give them times to stretch their legs and play with their buddies? I don't think so.  

What demand are we really filling here? It's not like the EU is exactly clamoring for our horse meat right now with all the scandals. With that market gone, the meat people are still going to see a big drop in prices- which  kind of defeats the purpose of having slaughter back in the US.


Thankfully apparently our friend Tim is under direct investigation by the FBI. Either for cruelty to animals (unlikely to go anywhere since he's saying the horse was slaughtered for his own consumption, which is legal.) but hopefully it will also be brought up as a threat against animal rights activists since you know, he did insinuate a threatening remark against them before killing an animal and walking off. 

Sadly, this is a much less cruel death than most slaughter bound horses will face in reality. 
Oh, and to whoever sold that horse to slaughter, probably thinking it would go to a good home, I hope you see this video and feel like shit. I really do. Because I blame you and whoever bred this horse- you failed it.
