....Blog Near You

Well, there's less swearing now that I've calmed down some.
As I said, I went to go see that lovely little bay gelding.
Him
Well, the guy was honest over the phone and said how he'd bucked him off but that it was his fault. The first time he'd asked him to pick up his pace and the horse hadn't moved so he nudged him with his spurs (You don't use spurs on a greenie! Especially if you don't know what you're doing!) and the horse exploded. Shocking, I know.

Well when we got there he filled us in on a few other things. This hadn't been a gelding sitting in someone's pasture just eating grass for seven years- no, he'd bought an untamed, untrained stallion. Actually two of them. But they started beating the crap out of each other (Again, shocking...) and he returned one.

At this point I couldn't help myself and I asked him why the hell he bought a stallion?!
Yep, because he was pretty.
*Face Palm*

He got the horse gelded (thank God.) But it'd only been about 4 weeks.
He said the horse had also kicked at him and had charged and bit him the other day when he was round penning him. He'd been trying to get him to react and change directions a lot when the horse "suddenly" got aggressive. He said this had been a major breach in his trust. (In your trust, what about your horses trust?)

Then he told us how he'd gotten fed up and wouldn't have a "dangerous" horse around his kids. (GOOD. But why would you buy a wild stallion in the first place?!) He was tired of the horse being unpredictable and aggressive, blablabla.

That was about when I had my fill of people for the day and went into the pen with the gelding. The guy told me I'd want to take the stick/bat- not for abuse, but to protect myself from the unpredictable/aggressive horse.
My face

So I went in with my helmet on, my clicker bag and a halter/lead rope.
It was pretty clear from the moment I walked in that this horse wasn't aggressive. He was goddamn terrified. In fact, he was extremely submissive- constantly getting out of my space- he wasn't even comfortable being pet/touched.

I immediately abandoned any idea of riding him. This horse was about as mentally prepared for that as a first grader is to do calculus.
I did some clickering and we played the following game- you know, putting him in charge of working with me. Making him use his brain for once. He did, but he would still leave if I pet him.

I eventually tried sort of crowding him into a corner to see what he'd do and how he'd react. Since he was so 'unpredictable and aggressive'. Well his response was to look at me, tense his neck muscles and swish his tail a little bit. So I backed off. It was a pretty clear "I'm not okay with this, please back off" signal to me.  Not being an idiot or suicidal, I backed off.

That was a perfectly rational response to my actions- he was scared, getting overwhelmed and he gave me clear warning to stop. I feel it's important to remember that he'd been a stallion until very, very recently so his flight or fight response isn't going to be as easy to manipulate as a gelding.

While naturally submissive, he's going to defend himself if he feels trapped.

The guy had said that he kept doing "disrespectful" things like turning his butt to you. (I should also mention this guy was a follower of Clint Anderson- not that there's anything wrong with that, but this guy clearly didn't know about release and timing and those methods do not work with without that knowledge.) Yeah. The horse was trying to get away, not being disrespectful.

After a bit, I knew this was way more of a project than I could take on right now. Also that we're leaving for a while in under a month and I can't let my neighbor feed a horse that can react to things dangerously.
I don't think the horse was naturally aggressive or mean in any way, but he still reacted to things like a stallion who'd never been taught things would. And that absolutely can be dangerous.

I mentioned that I didn't think the horse was actually aggressive- he gave me clear signals he was having problems coping. The guy said he hadn't done that with him.
I said actually he probably had, but it just takes years of practice to spot them when they're small.
He got all defensive.

Come on now, I wasn't even saying that you're a fucking idiot and you have no business owning this horse or that these problems were also your fault. I WANTED to, but I didn't. I think I should have gotten a cookie for that.

I did say that I'm amazed he rode the horse. Because I am. That horse had NO business having a saddle, much less a rider, on his back for a very, very long time. I wouldn't ride him right now if you paid me. I think it's cruel and stupid personally.

He said he'd ridden him several times but he'd been fine... I really, realllllllly wanted to ask, "And how long did you run him in the round pen before that?"
But again, I didn't. Not being sassy to him actually gave me a headache.

That poor horse. I feel awful for him. There's nothing inherently wrong with him, but the asshat who bred him and didn't do anything with him? Oh yeah, there's a lot wrong there.
The beginner who has no goddamn business owning a greenie of any kind? Yeah. There too.

But he's going to take many months, possibly years before he'd be safe enough to sell to a trail rider and I can't have a project that long. I just cant. While I think he's a good horse, there are lots of good horses going to slaughter every day that will not need months to turn them around. That means I can get more of them out of the slaughter pipeline and keep them out of it.

The poor boy even went so far as to nicker to me and lick my hand at one point. It was heartbreaking. I hate feeling like I'm failing a horse and feeling guilty because other people keep fucking up.

I know that I *could* do a lot with him if I had all the time, money and hay in the world. But I don't. I can't have more than one-two projects at a time with out pasture size. We have to feed hay year round.

I also cannot and will not have a potentially dangerous horse around my mother. Her hip still isn't fully healed and she can't walk well and she likes to go out with the horses.

I left the property spitting mad. The first thing I said to my mother: "I have a headache... from all the stupid. I had such a hard time not yelling at the owner." I know he's new. But he's the kind of beginner that thinks they're somehow exempt from being, well, a beginner. You do not magically know more than every other beginner- you are not unique and special because you watched some training videos.

You have not done a good job with this horse and he should still be in the "Can I touch/halter you" stage of work.  You have done a grave injustice to this poor, sweet animal. And now he's going to pay for it.

You are a asshole.

Ugh. I hate people.

Coming soon to a blog near you!

I went to go see that gorgeous little bay gelding this afternoon. You're all going to get an update, either tonight or tomorrow. Tonight I'm going out though. I need a drink.

I'm warning you all now, there will be lots of swearing.

Long story short, it fit the bill of "There are no bad horses, only horses who've had bad owners."

What will $500 buy you in Arkansas?

I was chatting with someone about the cute bay gelding below who said that $500 for a project like him was a steal. I thought it was actually rather steep- horses go for squat in my area. So I thought i'd see some of the diversity of what $500 bucks (or less) will get you around here. No snark, or at least very little, just examples.

I think this little mare is an absolute steal!

And now for your daily dose of hilarity/delusional owners

Will Trade a Registered 2 year Old Appaloosa

I'm getting a 2 year old Appaloosa gelding on Saturday, and I am willing to trade him for a horse that is a little older and a little bigger. i'm also in need of a horse trailer that will be big enough to haul three horses. I will be willing to trade him for both since he is registered

Hahahaha, yeah I'd happily trade my older, bigger, probably broke horse and a 3 horse trailer for one runty/stunted few spot, grungy appy gelding with no chest, crappy neck, and who's cowhocked, so overall sub-par conformation. What a steal!  But he's worth it because he's *registered!* Because shitty horses can't be registered or anything..  Just because it has papers, doesn't mean it's a quality horse. I'd much rather buy the 14 year old mare above who isn't registered, thanks.
Not to mention, they don't even have the horse yet and are probably getting him free or dirt cheap from the sounds of it.

More horse related face palms.

1.  HANDSOME 12 YEAR OLD SORREL

ROCKET IS A 12 YEAR OLD SORREL GELDING- BARREL AND POLE. HAS ALSO BEEN RIDEN ON TRAILS. KID SAFE. WE ARE MOVING AND MUST SELL. PRAYING HE GETS A GOOD HOME. GOD BLESS.
Ad Type: For Sale  Name: ROCKET Breed: Quarter Horse Gender: Gelding Color: Sorrel
Height: 15.00 hands Temperament: 2 (1 - calm; 10 - spirited) Age: 12 yrs Registered: No. Price: $ 1,200

This ad just rubs me the wrong way. Not because there's anything really wrong about it or because the horse doesn't look well cared for but because of the phrase "praying he gets a good home".

Well that's just great. You know, I can pray all I want that people will stop being jackasses and taking good horses to the auction. I can pray until I'm blue in the face that the kill buyer won't get lots of those horses. I can pray until I pass out that people will stop breeding crappy horses and you know what will change? Nothing.

Why? Because I haven't done a goddamn thing to actually make it happen. If you want your horses to get a good home you don't just pray about it. You make sure the horse only gets sold to a good, approved, home. End of story. There's no trick, there's no magic, there's actual goddamn work involved. If that horse doesn't get a good home, it's not because fate willed it that way- it's because you were lazy and YOU didn't do your job as an owner.

I make sure my horses go to good homes. I screen people. You have the internet- you would be amazed how much you can find out about people by doing a simple google search or a facebook check. You ask questions, lots of them. You ask for pictures or to come do a check. You ask for pictures of their other horses and what their care schedule is. You have them come out and you watch them ride and interact with your horse. You have them sign a contract. If anything doesn't add up to you, you say "Sorry, I don't feel comfortable selling you my horse" or "I don't think you're the right fit."

Bam. There you go. When I'm selling a horse I literally turn away dozens of people I don't feel are a good match. Some of them get mad. Some of them swear at me. Some of them thank me for my honesty. But no matter what, my horse ends up in a good home.

But TT you say, the horse market is awful and it's a buyers market! I can't do afford to do that!
..... I can and so can you. I'm a freaking college student. You think my horses are magical beings that are just naturally better than every other horse? No. It's because I make sure to present them well, take good pictures of them all cleaned up, and I write an ad that actually tells you about the horse.  Here are some of our ad pictures:

At a jog

Bareback at a walk

Playing in the pasture

Kota just went off to his new home yesterday. I had him listed for under a week and we had people calling nonstop. Someone cried when we said we'd already found him a home. Is this because he's better than every other horse out there? NO.  It's because we represented him well...and we trained him.. Do your goddamn job and make SURE your horse gets a good home.
Here's a picture they sent me of Kota in his new home.

Gah. End rant. That's just a pet peeve of mine (You may notice that I've got a lot of those). Like when someone tried to guilt me at an auction by saying, "I sure hope he don't go to the killers, he's such a nice horse." *hint hint* *buy him*
I responded rather coldly by saying: "If you don't want him to go to slaughter than DON'T LET HIM. Don't let the kill buyer get him. No sale him and sell him online." This is not a complicated issue folks.

And now for an ad that I have a problem with because... well, hell, take your pick.

2. FILLY PAINT/GAITED B/W HORSE - $900

I HAVE A YEARLING BORN IN APRIL OF 2011
DAD WAS REGISTERED BLACK/WHITE TEN. WALKER/RACKING,MOM IS TRICOLOR PAINT ,NOT GAITED NOR REGISTERED
SHE HAS BEEN REGUARLY WORMED AND VACCINATED. COGGINS IN AUG OF 2012
SHE WAS WEANED AT 5-6 MONTHS OF AGE. AND HAS BEEN MESSED WITH SINCE DAY ONE. HALTER/LEAD BROKE. TRAILER LOADS. STANDS TIED. STANDS FOR FERRIER. EVEN TEMPERED, QUICK TO LEARN. SHE IS GREAT AND INTERACTIVE. SHE HAS BEEN RODE A HANDFUL OF TIMES AND IS CATCHING ON TO NECK REINING. NO OFFERS TO BUCK. WILL CROSS BRIDGES, CREEKS, DITCHES. HAS NO ISSUES WITH DOGS, VEHICLES OR ANYTHING ELSE I HAVE EXPOSED HER TO.
SHE LOOKS TO BE GAITED.
SHE HAS BEEN ON TRAIL RIDES SINCE SHE WAS A YEAR OLD, USED AS PACK HORSE. SHE HAS NOT BEEN ROUND PEN WORKED.
SHE IS LOOKING TO BE 16=6.2 HANDS. GREAT FEET.
HER NAME IS CLEOPATRA

...... Okay. You have a yearling/ now 2 year old? I hope this ad was written at two distinct times... You have an obvious (I really hope) oops baby that may or bay not actually be gaited.  I'm glad she's been messed with. But why the hell is she being ridden over what sounds like fairly difficult places? I'm all for horses being ponied on the trails, but using a yearling as a pack horse? That I'm not so cool with.

Quarter Horse for sale - $1000

15 yr old Gelding - trail horse, anybody can ride. He is very sweet and has a lot of personality.

Uh. That horse certainly looks to have "lots of personality" but sweet isn't exactly the word I'd use. That horse looks like it's 3 seconds away from biting that guys hand off. There is nothing in that posture that indicates the horse wants to be there.

4. Horse for sale - $500

That mane and baby-doll face! I love it.

I have a beautiful dark bay quarter horse gelding for sale (check out the pics). 15 hands. Approximately 7 years old. Not registered as far as I know (didn't get papers when I got him). Current coggins. Feet recently trimmed. Recently dewormed. He is green broke and a little too headstrong horse for me (I'm a beginner). He's extremely athletic and intelligent but needs someone more experienced than myself to work with him. He had never been messed with when I got him but I was able to halter break him and he's pretty good with ground work. I'm just not enough of a horseman at this point to advance him any further under saddle. Price is listed at $500 but it is quite negotiable. He has thrown me twice (I'm an absolute rookie) so you're welcome to bring a saddle and ride him if you wish but you do so at your own risk. I believe (but you'll have to confirm) Slider has the athletic ability to make a pretty good roping or barrell horse with some help from somebody who can handle him, that's just not me. I'll sell him to whoever presents me with the money but THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER'S HORSE!!!!! Let me know if you're interested, otherwise he's going to the sale on May 4.

Okay, so let's get a few things straight. You bought a horse who wasn't even halter broke and you're a complete beginner. You are essentially getting rid of him because he's thrown you twice, you a person who admits they have no business training a horse, and you will sell him to anyone who gives you money. So, basically you're dumping him, either to whoever has cash or at a sale, because you bit off more than you could chew.  Uh'huh. What exactly did you think was going to happen?! You'd have a magical bond that suddenly allowed the horse to understand exactly what you wanted? That he'd be so happy to be getting a job you wouldn't have any setbacks?

I give them full props for teaching the horse ground work. I do. I see that they've obviously been watching training videos and trying to work with the horse.  I also see a horse that does not appear to be mean or spiteful in any way. Of course he's not a beginners horse! He doesn't know anything yet!  Green and Green makes black and blue.

In other news, I admit I want that horse. I love his mane and his build and his baby-doll face. I think he's probably decently well bred. I think he's absolutely adorable. But my mother would kill me if I brought home a project that big. On the other hand, it really does take less time to train a horse the right way than to re-train a horse with faults.....   That said, I really do like him... Those ears are very clearly listening to what the guy is asking and the horse appears relaxed- his lower lip is drooping in the picture where he's picking his foot up. This horse does not deserve to go to a sale where he will probably be run through and end up going to a kill buyer.

Quick Update

Hey y'all,
I just thought I'd let you know that I haven't died in some crazy horse related accident or suddenly dropped off the internet and abandoned everyone.
My laptop cord decided to die on me last week and I just got my new one. Also I was super sick

Ps, showing a horse to potential buyers when you have the flu is not fun.
"Can you show us his canter?"
"Honestly? No. That will make me throw up and then I will be grumpy. I did say that on the phone, remember?"
Seriously folks, if I have a fever over a hundred I am not going to be super active, sorry.

In other news I should be studying for an exam tomorrow (so what's new? It's not horse related so my interest is nil.)

I presented my thesis research today! It went really well and all the professors said they thought it was really interesting and that they liked it.

For the record, my thesis was:

Spirituality in Equine Assisted Therapy: How Spirituality Can Enhance Equine Assisted Therapy Practices by Improving Health and Facilitating Whole Person Wellness.

I do have a thesis defense next week but then I'm finally done with the damn thing. Can you believe this is all required for my damn undergraduate degree?

Okay, my study break is officially over. Horse stuff to resume later.

......8:40 am edit- Do not- I repeat, do NOT take a 14 hour energy shot in one go. (Yes they make those.)  If you do take it, do not take it at 10 at night.

.....If you do take the whole thing at 10 pm and you have a case of the caffeine jitters at 6 am, taking a small dose of melatonin can help.

....I'd avoid it though if I were you.

This has been TT's tip of the day/night!

2:25 am update: Still no crash. Was awesomely productive all day. Weird.

Why would you use these pictures?

1. bomb proof gaited gelding - $1200

We have a 17 year old black gaited gelding. This boy is big stout and can gait all day. Been thru it all. Rodeos, parades, trail camp. stands good. Has great manners. He would be great for an older person or kid or just someone who is new at riding. Will stand beside trailer for mounting and unmounting. He still has it for a older horse! We have uses a buddy seat and rode double. He don't care about much! Come out and see him for yourself! Asking 1200 or best offer. May trade. Let me know what ya got. Just don't want a gaited horse. Has new shoes and coggins!

Uhh, nice fencing. Why the hell would you use that picture in your ad? But hey, he's been through it all! Possibly including the fence!

2. Kid Horse - $350

Biscuit is a 14 year old quarter horse. She's broke to ride an lazy but the sweetest horse I've ever had! she'll follow you around like a puppy dog an always wants you to rub her or brush her. I've never had not one problem with her. she'd make a great kid horse or even someone who'd just like to have a horse

Okay, so does anyone actually think that horse is only 14? She's in good weight, but the key word lazy in combination with that back and graying by the muzzle says older to me. Also, why would you use that halter for pictures? Just take it off (and throw it away).  Otherwise, the mare seems happy and well fed which is good.

3. PALAMINO GELDING - $700 (WHITE HALL)
4.5 YRS OLD. GENTLE, BROKE, 16.2 HANDS

DRINKS COFFE WITH ME IN MORNING.
MOVING CANT TAKE WITH ME.

I... wait... he what?
*snickers* because coffee drinking is more important then breed, training, disposition.... I wonder how that influences his daily energy levels. Does he get grumpy without his morning fix?

4. Flea bitten gray mare - $2000

She just isn't getting the attention she needs but she is a great horse!!! Just needs a good home.

Why, sure I'll be happy to pay two grand for a unspectacular colored horse that's covered in mud and I know nothing about! Breed? Age? Training? Disposition? Problems?  That's for fancy city folks. After all, all she needs is a good home and some attention and she'll turn in to.... Umm, a unicorn? Yeah, a unicorn!

5. For a kid! Prefer a gelding, 13-14 hands, quarter type, arnd 10 ys old, very well broke, no gated horse, must be in good shape and a good looking horse, please don't try to sell me a horse with any problems, must be completely sound, no cripples! Be 100% honest about your horse please... If it isn't like you say, please be ready to give my money back... Must not EVER buck or run away... For my daughter... We have a wonderful home for your horse.. My money is good and my word is too.. Thanks..

So you'd like the perfect horse that never ever does anything bad no matter what, right? Well I'd like a car that never needs fixing or a tune up no matter how crap I put it through or how bad of care I give it.
Let me just re-list those requirements:
You want a 10 year old gelding that's between 13 and 14 hands high, very well broke but still kid safe, that's 100 % sound and never ever does anything bad and you want a money back guarantee.
Nothing about this ad would make me want to reply to it even if I did have such a horse. There is no such thing as a horse that NEVER does anything bad despite what the rider does. If there it's probably a lot older than 12.

 6. 8 month old pony - $400

We have a 8 month old colt weaned n ready to find a new home. She's very friendly and easy to catch and halter broke! My 4 yr old went and got on her for the first time the other day she didnt run or buck. we NEED to sale her quick!!!  WIILL MAKE A GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR YOUR LITTLE ONE!

Well I see other people are thankfully as disgusted by this as I am and are proving it with their wallets.

What the hell is wrong with you?! It's not even a yearling yet! Of course she didn't buck, she probably had no idea what was going on. Most horses won't buck the first time you get on them, they just stand there in shock if you haven't prepared them in advance.
Also, is it a colt or a filly? Make up your mind.
Ugh.

For comparison, the very next ad I clicked on was this:

7. cute gental 2 yr old miniture horse stud - $125

He is very gental, was bought for my two girls as a pet. They are 8&9 years old... They have led each other around on him, but I have made them stop for fear of hurting him. He is only 30" tall. Asking what I paid for him. Good home preferd...

Now I don't LOVE this ad either, I hate this he's still a stud and the good home 'preferred' makes me cringe inside.  However, the horse looks to be in good health and the parent recognizes that their children are too big and make them stop. Thank you! That is a pleasant surprise.

8.  AQHA Mare Timeless Affair - $300

AQHA Mare Timeless Affair for sale. She is 22 years old. She is a sorrel mare and a own daughter of Diversified on the top and In Question, Go Galla's Man, Tonto Bars Hank on the bottom side. This mare has 4 AQHA points in Youth Western Pleasure and has showed very well in 4H. She has produced two foals who have shown in 4H shows. She has a loving and willing nature. She works well n the round pen and in the show ring. Affair side passes, backs up, stops on a dime, always takes the correct lead for a lope. On the trial she is willing to go and does not spook at anything. We would like her to go into someones breeding program and produce more winning offspring. This mare does have navicular but can be ridden lightly. Affair would be great for a lesson horse to teach novice riders. She has been ridden by lightly my 13 year old daughter and 5 year old daughter. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Okay. I like that this mare is older and in good shape. I like that she's registered and well broke. I hate that she's 22, with navicular, and they want her to be a broodmare or lesson horse. Look, she's won a whopping 4 points and her offspring have shown in the super amazing realm of 4H (notice they don't say won) and she's only worth $300. What about that says breed her?! NOTHING.
