Nothing sets off the crazy color breeder alarm like a helmet-less child on a stallion, bonus points if it's loose! 

Okay, so he's not looker and has several faults, and no apparent spots, it's cool but at least they're ghost spots (I guess), but wait a  moment, those back legs look kind of   really fucked up.  Those are super fucking base wide and toed out. This tells me that he is attempting to get stability at the price of mobility. Have fun doing anything besides casual riding or trails...  Maybe he's just standing funny and they didn't care enough to take a good picture.... 

Oh, well shit. This is one of his foals. Or maybe he's not just standing funny up there... Okay, let's be nice, maybe the baby is also standing funny? 

...Again, or not... At least it has spots so it's not as bad? (Said no one ever)  

I'm sorry, I just don't see how it can stand like that comfortably without a conformation fault to help .

Let's have one more horse from them

Sugar is a gaited 14 hand tall painted pony. She is a sweet pony with a lot of love to give. She is 5 yrs old and was bought for my son a yr ago. He has out grown her and has gotten a bigger horse. She loads, ties, brushes,& rides great. She has a lot of get up and go but does know how to go slow and steady when asked. She learns fast but was only really used for tails and pasture play rides for 5 children. She is kid safe and has no bad habits. (I really have no problem with a mare being used as a trail horse, especially for kids. I think that's perfectly fine and dandy.) Only thing we never over came with her was her fear of spray bottles. She does have a unique marking on her right side. She also may be bred to my appaloosa stud. (Oooh, oh dear.) (you could be getting a 2 for 1 deal.) Okay, so she's not even close to what I'd call breeding quality.... That front end.... And again, we're kind of cow hocked/toed out- poor baby won't have a chance. That is one serious nest she's got going on there... I bet her trot- sorry, gait, is awful. 

Okay, so she's short and stubby but at least she's in good weight and her feet look decent. But why exactly is the lead rope hooked to the top side loop while she's tied to the fence? 

Aaaaannd we've left the world of fine. Two children, sitting on a horse tied to the metal fence.... genius! Okay, if that pony is 14 hands then that is one tall ass (I'm guessing) 9 year old. No way.

Son, that pony looks pissed- as she has a right to be. That is not safe, smart or showing the horse off as calm and a babysitter. Just stop. Please. 

I take it back, maybe that pony does have the patience of a saint, but that's still really stupid. Poor horse. Someone upgrade her and hope she isn't pregnant? Or that it's too late for that special shot.... 

Just someone tell them to stop breeding- please and to get their kids helmets.

LET US HELP YOU FIND YOUR PERFECT RIDE

Okay, well besides having something against not using the caps lock key and loving internet screaming, this ad doesn't sound too bad. In fact, that sounds pretty good- not taking spelling or grammar into account. So what's the problem? (I'm only blacking out the faces of the kids on this one, the adults chose to submit the pictures into the world wide totally accessible by everyone web.)

"I don't have shoes or a helmet because my parents don't believe this "kid safe" thousand pound animal could possibly have a bad day or get stung by a bee and freak out and really hurt me. "

Why bother adjusting the nose band? Ol' Grey won't mind. Feet too far in the stirrups? Well, at my age getting drug won't be that bad, right? Right? No? Damn.

This doesn't show me your horse is safe. This shows me you're too dumb to know how totally not safe that is or how bad for the horses back it is. That does not say "We train safe horses" this says "We don't care about safety of horses or humans!" Please tell me that horse is not tied to the trailer. Please. Because it sure seems like it is or the horse is just loose.

Do I really need to say anything here? 

Okay, honestly WHAT do you have against child safety or proper riding gear?! Do you actually hate your children or do you just think these kinds of stunts will convince people that your horses are family safe? Maybe you think they couldn't possibly get hurt because that happens to other people, not to you. This is just plain dumb and good lord, that poor horse. Why are you pulling on the tail? To show it doesn't kick? WHY are you doing it with no helmet with someone riding who doesn't even seem to be wearing heeled boots?
Now, I'll be honest, I don't really like kids either but if you're going to have them at least stop trying to kill them!

After viewing their for sale page and seeing all the kid broke horses listed all I have to say is; just because your kids can ride them, doesn't mean everyone else's can! There are not that many truly kid safe anyone can ride horses around. There just aren't. Now if they'd just take off the completely unsafe pictures off the site and buy their kids some helmets (and boots) I wouldn't have that much to say about them, I really wouldn't. *sigh*

Yes, eating sugar out of my hand is exactly what I consider gentle. Because crazy or wild horses won't do that either or anything. But in all honesty, what do they have against taking a whole body picture? 

2. Stud

Okay. Let's just pause a moment here, what exactly would make that horse produce nice foals? Is it the insanely short neck? The straight shoulder? Unrefined throat latch leading to a huge head? (His coloring isn't doing it any favors either, but even knowing that it's making it look worse....) His pointy toes that scream- "I've probably been left to wear my own feet down!" The weak rump? The hot damn straight long back in the second picture? Oh, I bet I know! It's because he has spots, isn't it?!

Okay so this is a term that just drives me crazy. I hate it. Every freaking auction they use it. Well, is it a filly or is it a colt? Make up your damn mind. Or is it perhaps both in this scenario? We may never know....

9. Registered Sorrel Qtr Mare - $800

Raise some beautiful colts with this 26 yr old Sorrel mare or just go trail or pleasure riding. Has blaze face and stockings on hind legs. 

The Ole Man and Three Bars on sire side. Has produced beautiful colt in the past. This mare has been in the family for years. We do not ride her anymore and someone could enjoy her and get some good colts.

Well folks, it appears it's time for the asshat ad of the day. You've had this mare for years, you're probably selling her because she's harder to get in foal and harder to keep in general. The state of the back says she's probably popped out a whole lot of babies for you and other people. She's 26 and hasn't earned a good retirement or being put down? Really?! The only nice thing I can say is that at least she's out of the KB's price range..... now backyard breeders on the other hand....  And seriously, Three Bars isn't exactly rare. 

10. Royal Red Dandy/Paint Gelding - $750 

I have a chestnut/overo paint gelding according to the papers but i would say he is sorrel. Foaling date- May 24 1999  I traded for this horse a couple of years ago but just havent found time to ride him much. He's a good horse and has never bucked, bit, kicked or done anything crazy other than not wanting to take his wormer one time.  I can show you the paper work where he sold for $2,000 in 2004 and then had $1,275 spent on training at Dry Creek Training. I"ll take $750 or trade for some good hay or might trade for some goats or a cow or calf/calves.

You can show me all the papers you want, but you aren't going to convince me that horse is worth $750 right now. From the look of him he's not wanted to take his wormer well more than once.... That horse is also pretty clearly a straight up chestnut like his papers say. Yikes, that back looks unpleasant as does that shoulder, bet his trot is wretched. Poor thing. He'd look a lot better fattened up...

11. 16 year old Tennessee walker - $300

A little weight? I sincerely hope you rescued her, then again that fence doesn't scream reassurances. That horse would look a whole lot worse without the fuzzy coat. Also she looks very back at the knee.

Okay, it wasn't *awful* until the picture with the baby.... That horse does not look happy and it certainly does not make me want to give you my business  Now in the picture with the boy riding, could your feet be any further in the stirrups? (Don't answer that) But do answer what is the point of the back cinch if it's both that loose and not connected to the front cinch?

Well, my week has been a delightful cocktail (unfortunately not literally) of thesis deadlines, mad studying for an exam over stuff I don't fully understand (screw you cognitive neuroscience- I signed up for sensation and perception!) and freezing rain. Last week it was sunny 55+, this week? Freezing rain and slush.

Of course my horses have to be dummies and refuse to go in the nice stalls we built them, instead they just stand shivering in the icy rain until I chase them down and blanket them. My mothers horse is the worst offender- she refuses to go in, has a weak winter coat, shivers like crazy and yet she does not want to be blanketed. My gelding HATES water and rain with a fiery passion so he's pretty good about keeping dry but he also hates being alone... We can always tell when it's raining because Sam will take off back to the barn with his head tucked. Kota has decided he thinks stalls are awesome.

Anyway the interaction went something like this:

Me: "Here fatties!" *Kota comes running* "Blankets for everyone!" *second horse immediately says 'I'm out upon seeing the blanket'* 
I tromp through the mud to bring them up.
Nora: 'No! I don't wanna and you can't make me!'
Me: "Dammit horse just come here! You'll thank me once you're warm! ..... .... .. Okay you probably won't but I don't care"
Nora: 'Lies! You won't put that horse eating blanket on me this time! ..... ..... Oh you have grain? Well why didn't you say so?  *halter* Dammit, tricked again! Doesn't matter. Had grain.' 

Max: 'I'm with my lady friend- blankets are evil! Eh, running is too much work- I give up.' *stands like a perfect gentleman then refuses to leave*

Sam: *comes up then proceeds to fidget around the entire time* 'Are we gonna ride mom? Huh? Yeah? Ride? Go fast? Huh? Ahh rain! I wanna go in, I wanna go in!' 

Me: * Upon realizing that the last available blanket won't fit the last horse I begin my search through the tack room in search of another decent blanket- re-catch a horse that it will fit and swap them. Put that blanket on the last horse. Return inside soaking wet, freezing and grumpy. Complain to mum about the horses not going in the stalls we built for just this purpose.*

Poor Kota, they were being awful to him this past week. Nora and one of my boys (the neighbors couldn't identify the guilty chestnut- Max looked guilty when I came out, but that may just be because I was angry- Sam doesn't really do guilt so that's not helpful.) were being bullies to Kota and pinned him against the fence biting and kicking him- he's got nice huge marks on his neck now. They also managed to break four fucking fence posts in the process. I am so dang sick of replacing fence posts- this is NOT the first time they've pulled this stunt either. Kota is too easy going to fight back which is a shame because one good return fire and they'd back off.

I'm considering investing in a horsey shock collar; I'd save a bunch on posts and first aid stuff.... Bah. I'm still grumpy at them, partially because I had to go home when I should have been studying and put blankets on and fix where they'd ripped them romping around during the last cold spell. We're ordering some new nice waterproof ones- I am way too excited about that.

I've been too busy with school work to do any horse stuff. Oh, we bought two used western saddles for $250 (for pictures since I'm tired of people asking what the hell my endurance saddle is) and I was trying one of them out when the dang fender broke. Needed to be oiled. *sigh* This has not been my week.

Auction update!

So after I dropped off my mare at her new home, gorgeous by the way, I went to the Beebe auction.

Where there were around a whopping 45 horses. 45. There's normally 100-250! It was insane, I've never seen it that empty. Which is great! But it was still shocking. I didn't actually expect to come home with anything since they normally go high then. There was the regular number of people there. Lots of tack. I actually only came home with one new black halter for $4. I regret not picking up some other stuff now.
Anywho.....

Auction report! A short one because I left pretty early.


1.14 y/o 15.2 palomino gelding, looked pretty thin in the pen but not too bad under saddle. Ridden through, said he was gaited. Washy color palomino, nothing fancy but he seemed sweet. Was interested in kids before the sale. $345

2. Fugly sabino/chestnut stud, not ridden through, said he was "broke" but not even led through. Not a single reason he should have his bits. $95  n/s

3. Pinto chestnut stud colt, weanling/yearling, straight shoulder, runty, $40 kb- owner n/s Same owner as above (because gelding is evil apparently!)

3. Pinto yearling stud colt, bay, terrified in the ring. $45

4. 7 y/o Palomino mare, VERY skinny, auctioneer even commented on her condition, not ridden through, bad feet, long backed, looked lame.  $55 TD

13. 11 y/o bay paint gelding, ridden through. Rode okay, idiot rider kept spurring him and jerking him around. Sweet in the pen. Thought he was drugged at first he was so laid back. Didn't respond to my yelling like an idiot. Then I brought out a carrot and he was suddenly my new best friend, licked my hands. Fine with being touched all over. About 15.1. He err, came home with me... $355.

14. Bay paso fino mare, short, ridden through, 6 y/o. Extremely nervous and jumpy in the pen. I pet her and she jumped a mile. Her rider was clearly walking on egg shells when riding. I normally can't pass up a paso but I let her go since I already found my project. $145 Td? Kb?

15. Tiny fat mini, looked like a little furry pig! Scared but adorable. $75

16.JUST turned 2 years old, grulla gelding. Ridden through. Saddle kept slipping all over the place and the asshat kept jerking it into place. Tried to please. Should be cute when mature Real small though. $165 TD

17. 11 y/o bay pony mare, led through, sold with complete tack. Girl in ring said she bucked, not over speaker, then another kid jumped on. Mare looked pissed and ready to act up. $75 KB

18. 15 y/o chestnut mare, reg AQHA, ridden through, kept tossing her head. Possibly the riders fault. $270

19.  BIG and flashy 16.2 hand Missouri Fox Trotter gelding. Good conformation, lonnnggg legs. Ridden through, nervous. Talked to owner before the sale- wasn't a gaited horse person and got him in a trade. He was my second choice. Said he was kind of hard to catch and he hadn't ridden him. He'd been Amish owned in the past. His halter has started to grow into his face at one point. $450 to private home. Talked to them a little after the sale since our paints were in the same pen, seemed nice.

When show sheened, he needs some weight. I'm hoping they sold him because they ran out of food and wanted to get rid of the horses before it got too bad. 

I didn't even notice he was branded until I was cleaning him off today! I'm a sucker for a horse with a brand. 

 Trimming his goat beard. He was very patient, clearly used to being messed with. Fine with my spraying show sheen too.

Riding him. He was a little nervous once I brought out the saddle and pad. Seemed like someone had smacked him around before. Slow walk. 

He got a little sour expression wise when I asked him to trot but didn't do anything. He seemed like he was waiting for me to flop all around and spur him, he perked up when I didn't. He's got a super smooth trot.  I expect he's used to a curb bit. Needs a refresher but definitely knows stuff.

He's going to be a goofball when he's warmed up to us and is comfortable.

Of course. I spend an hour and half grooming him, use show sheen and bath in a bottle, scrub him clean aannnd the first thing he does it run through the mud puddle in the back of the pasture. Max was being mean to him, he's very upset that he took clover's place.

Because the mud puddle wasn't enough..... God dammit. What horse rolls when the other horse are still harassing them?! 

Anyhow, he's such a sweetie. He's going to be so happy when he realizes he can come out of his shell. Also he's going to be gorgeous when he's all shed out and gains that weight back. Very happy he came home with us.
His mane makes me giggle.

Well I'm delivering one of my projects to her new home this afternoon! Also I'm going to evaluate their other horse, they offered him to me for free but I'd feel bad taking him now knowing there's another horse going to slaughter because of it. I could probably take him in the summer when I have time to work with a big project daily to twice a day.
Anywho, I'm going to deliver her to her new home on 50-75 acres; so jealous, I'd kill for five! Then after getting her settled in and hopefully testing the gelding we're driving straight to the Beebe auction to see who's going to get a second chance. I'm going to bring my notebook so I'll do another auction report. If I'm lucky I'll be able to snap a few pictures but no promises, they tend to get pissy about that.
